QAnon and Conspiracy Theories Within Our Society | Green Left Show #5
Tuesday Mar 02, 2021
Tuesday Mar 02, 2021
How do conspiracy theories grow and take hold in society? What gives them so much power? And how can we counter the loss of solidarity in our society and rebuild communities in a time of increasing precarity both online and in the real world?
Jono Mi Lo, Aleks Wansbrough, Fred Fuentes and Dirk Kelly look at what a left response to the rise of QAnon, the Trump adjacent alt-right internet phenomenon that encouraged people to storm the US capital, and other contemporary conspiracy theories could look like.

2050 is too late: the climate targets we need | Green Left Show #4
Sunday Feb 21, 2021
Sunday Feb 21, 2021
The Morrison government (along with the ALP) is facing some pressure on climate policy due to the election of the Biden government alongside public pressure. But too much mainstream commentary is focused on "net zero by 2050" including as a result of Zali Steggall's climate bill.
But 2050 is too late. We need climate action now.
This episode of the Green Left Show focuses on the climate targets we need featuring David Spratt (Research Director at the Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Restoration and author of Climate Code Red), Pip Hinman (editor of Green Left) and Kamala Emanuel (one of the initial drafters of the Socialist Alliance climate charter).

Struggling for ecosocialism in the age of Elon Musk with Aleks Wansbrough
Monday Feb 15, 2021
Monday Feb 15, 2021
In this podcast we speak with cultural theorist Aleks Wansbrough about his recent Green Left article, Struggling for ecosocialism in the time of Elon Musk. Musk and his ilk have become avatars for a green capital utopia, and have built their fortunes on the desire to see capitalism save itself. Wansbrough discusses the dystopian future of neo-feudalism that awaits us if the growth of "platform capitalism" is allowed to go unchecked. We also look at what Marx, Engels and other theorists have had to say about rapid technological advancement. To wrap up, Wansbrough tells us about his new book Capitalism and the Enchanted Screen.

"Political factionalism is behind Malaysia's new COVID-19 state of emergency"
Wednesday Jan 27, 2021
Wednesday Jan 27, 2021
On January 12, Malaysia's king declared a state of emergency until August 1 in the wake of a spike in COVID-19 infections to a record 3000 new infections a day. However, many Malaysians suspect that this has little to do with addressing the pandemic and more to do with extending the life of the minority government under Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. Green Left's Peter Boyle spoke to Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) Deputy Chairperson S. Arutchelvan (better known as Arul).

Wednesday Dec 23, 2020
Green Left host Jacob Andrewartha sits down with long-time multimedia journalist and radio reporter Michael Fox to discuss politics in Brazil. The discussion focuses on far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, in particular his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and policy of environmental destruction, and the grassroots resistance to his government. Also discussed are the recent municipal elections that took place in November.
Fox is a former editor of NACLA Report on the Americas, former director of video production at teleSUR English, and a former steering committee member of the daily radio news show, FSRN. Fox has reported extensively from across Latin America for NPR, PRI’s The World, DW, The Nation, Business Insider, The Intercept, AJ+, TRT World, The Real News and numerous other outlets
He is currently working on a 11-part podcast series titled "Brazil on Fire" that takes listeners across Brazil to cover Bolsonaro’s rise to power, the motivation of his supporters, and the communities that are holding on, resisting, or trying to fight back. You can read more about the project here.

Understanding the Venezuelan election results
Thursday Dec 17, 2020
Thursday Dec 17, 2020
The Venezuelan national assembly elections on December 6 were significant for the dramatic win by the governing PSUV (United Socialist Party of Venezuela) with 69% of the vote compared to the 2015 elections which were won by the right wing opposition. Nevertheless there was an abstention rate around 70% which reflects some weaknesses for the socialist project in Venezuela.
This interview with Fred Fuentes unpacks the issues around these elections.
