Andrew Chuter: Car-first transport system is destroying the climate
Wednesday Sep 18, 2024
Wednesday Sep 18, 2024
The car industry distorted transport system is destroying the climate, according to veteran public and active transport campaigner Andrew Chuter.
The latest statistics for Australia show that almost all the gains made from switching 40% of electricity generation to renewable energy have been cancelled out by rising greenhouse gas emissions mainly from transport.
Simply shifting to electric cars is not the solution, he argues. In a deep dive into the challenges we face breaking from decades of systematic 'colonising of our minds' by the big car manufacturers.
Chuter speaks with Green Left's Peter Boyle about what measures society urgently needs to take to reverse this situation.
